It's Not Rain

Here in Vancouver it is believed that once we get a good rain in August the heat never comes back. At least it is the 31st today, and it has been the greatest summer ever (23 everyday) so really I can't complain.

Looks like the whiny season has begun....

Funky Goes To Hollywood

It's Monday and I'm feeling a little funky. I didn't actually get a day off work, which makes 6 days in a row with another 6 to go. Definitely a funkykinda Monday. You might want to turn your gadar off before watching the video.

Don't Fear if it Smells Like Hurt

Ahh Sunday. My only day off. I am definitely grateful for that. These two and a half week long pay periods kinda blow, especially since I've only had one real paycheque. I could really use some cash.

I guess I will have to "settle" for some of the Johny kind. Cash that is. Although I really hate to use the word "settle". These are two of my favourite Johny Cash Mashups.

The first one is an audio mash. No real video, just a slide show. It is JC covering NiN's "Hurt" mashed with Nirvana with some BöC and New Order thrown in for good measure.

I also really like this remix of Hurt. It's very relaxing, almost melancholy. It's a great bedtime song, if you're not too depressed that is. I am quite happy myself and I love this mix.

Radioactive Tubular Girls

This one's not on YouTube, or at least that's not where I found it. It's a decent little techno-ish tune. It was sent to me on Facebook, and it's hosted on Vimeo. I am curious to see if I can watch it on my phone (I am on the iMac at work right now).

This is both a cool mash and an experiment.

The Ultimatest Hit Song

I figure Friday should be good for a laugh. Todays mashup is a little different. It wasn't done on a computer. It was performed live. The Axis of Awesome finally figured out how to write a hit song.

What's My Name?

Feeling a little bagged today. In the mood for something a little more soothing. I got just the tune. This is a little more slick than the average mashup. Both the audio and video are professionally done (I think). I can't even begin to list all the songs and artist that are a part of this amazing mix put together by DJ Earworm. Enjoy, I sure do.

You've Got Another Thing Runnin'

I really wanna rock today. I have just the remedy. Basic audio mash. No video. Straight up rock n roll.

Hey We Will Rock You Ya

This was the video that finally hooked me on mashups. I had enjoyed some in the past without realizing it. This one though was obviously not "official" or "real".

Sure is awesome though. The video works well, and is even kinda funny. The music rocks (of course). Enjoy.

If I Were A Free Fallin' Boy

I like Mondays, quite a bit. I don't have to work, and everything is open. For myself, it is a day of rejuvenation and relaxation. Today's song helps me with that. I find it soothing and relaxing. This is true also for both original songs as well.

I don't mind Beyonce, but I am a huge Tom Petty fan. What I especially appreciate about this song is how it fits together lyrically. It's almost more like a duet than a mashup. Enjoy.

Sweet Dreamy Army

I am a huge fan of Jack White and everything he does. I've seen him live a few times and he's always totally blown me away. Watching the Raconteurs playing Stanley Park's gorgeous Malkin Bowl amphitheatre one beautiful summer night was one of the most memorable concerts I've ever been to. The 3 bald eagles in the giant cedars especially stand out in mind.

I have always loved Annie Lennox and her music.

This next mashup is definitely one of the slickest, most polished and brilliantly executed mash's I have ever seen. Or heard. Sweet Dreams - both the music and the video - is blended seemlessly into the Seven Nation Army so well that it's almost hard to believe it's a true fan mash. I love how they even snuck themself in (just before the 3:00 mark). And, it totally rocks!

Yeah In The Shadows

It is my normal belief that heavier is better. This mashup is no exception. It combines one of Usher's most popular song's with something a little harder from The Rasmus. The resulting tune not only rocks, but it's danceable too!

A Perfect Tool

One of my reasons for doing this blog is to build myself a decent playlist of kick-ass tunes. Which means I need to include "the World's Greatest Band", Tool. Unfortunately, the pickings are slim when it comes to Tool mashups (hard to improve on perfection).

The best I could find so far was this mashup: Lil Flip vs A Perfect Circle. I have no idea who Lil Flip is or what their song is called. The APC song is their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". It's not Tool, but the next best thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3OxC1b9G5M&feature=youtube_gdata_player - Lil Flip vs A Perfect Circle

I can still sneak in a couple Tool songs with a little stretch. For the most part, the kind mashups I am looking for are new songs that are the result of combining two or more other songs. A mashup is something made (usually by fans or users) combining different pieces of other things (whether vocals, music or api's in the case of apps). While there may not be many (easily found) Tool mixes available, there are some truly awesome (and beautiful) fan videos. Which is sort of a mashup.

First is this one which features artwork by H. R. Gieger - who is obviously a huge inspiration to the band - set to their amazing cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5haxOU-P_o&feature=youtube_gdata_player - Tool "No Quarter"

Next, here is one of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen. It uses footage (mostly from the ending) from the incredible Hugh Jackman film "The Fountain". It is set to "Parabol". It would have been even better if it continued into "Parabola", but we can't have it all...

Gayest video ever - Lolliphone!

As a Korean boyband, I am unsure if their fans would agree with me. But I gotta say that from where I am watching, this vid is pretty gay. Hilarious though, and mashed with Gaga it actually kinda hops. A well done mash-up at the very least.

Get Back Rockin

There are allot of great Beatles mixes floating around. Here are two of my faves (so far at least).

This first one is currently one of my favourite tunes, and is in my daily playlist. It is "Get Back" punched up with LCD Soundsystem. Add a small dash of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and you get one kick-ass rockin Beatles track!

Exodus Revealed

This is currently my favourite tune on Youtube. Despite being a huge fan of Timbaland (and even JT), back in the day I was an old-school head-banger. I grew up on Maiden, Priest and AC/DC. But Bob Marley was cool too. Nobody told you to turn it off if you slipped some Bob into the playlist.

I really love this mash-up. Exodus (especially the 12 inch single) is one of my favourite songs of all time. By seeting it to the music of Iron Maiden's Revelations, Lobstredust has turned a reggae classic into a classic metal tune. It totally rocks!

Ghosts Over Bagdad

To be completely honest, I only discovered the world of mash-ups a few weeks ago, or at least that's when I became aware of them.

I first heard Bomb's Over Bagdad by Outkast with Rage Against The Machine months ago. At the time I thought it was a real colloboration. It sure sounded like it to my (completely lacking in any musical talent or skill) ears. I really had no idea that fans were creating their own music so easily, and that it was so good. And so easy to find and access.

I picked two songs today. There are lots of BoB mixes out there. My favourite is the one with rage. Not much on the video production though. The mash up vs Deadmau5 is great too, with the actual video as polished as the music.

Come Closer Together

What I like best about this mashup is how it blends both lyrics and vocals together to make a new song really. A Great Tune made from two great tunes.

Don't Cha Wanna Beat It

For my first post I am going to share this excellent mash-up combining the Pussy Cat Dolls' "Don't Cha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me" with Michael Jackson's "Beat It". Two bombastic songs full of bravado, which combine to make a song even more so than either. The videos and songs both fit together seamlessly. I like the new song better than either original.
